Being one of the 8 global public health campaigns World Blood Donor Day is celebrated every year on the 14th of June since 2004. 470ml of blood is all it takes for you to be a hero, artificial blood cannot be manufactured; hence blood donation remains as a vital source for helping patients worldwide. This day is celebrated on the birthday of a well known immunologist named Karl Landsteiner, who won the Nobel Prize in medicine for discovering the ABO blood group system.

Objectives of World Blood Donor Day

  • Raising public awareness of the need for regular blood donation throughout the year in order to maintain an adequate supply of blood and achieve self-sufficiency at the national level.
  • Engage authorities in the establishment of effective national blood donor programs with the capacity to respond promptly to the increase in blood demand during emergencies.
