World Sickle Cell Day

World Sickle cell day is celebrated on 19th year every year. Sickle cell disease is most common in the African and Asian countries. It was first established by United Nations General Assembly in 2008. On this day, awareness campaigns are conducted all over the world along with awareness activities that include bone marrow registration drives, discussion campaign, general conversation program among common public, sports activities, awareness surveys of people and many more.

Objectives World Sickle Cell Day

  • Raising awareness on the global burden of SCD, developing health programmes at the national level and specialized centers to access treatment.
  • Urging health institutions to pay attention to sickle cell anemia and promoting and supporting research to improve quality of life for those affected.
